Vegan Village Society and Plenty Food Netherland Boost Water Access for Sustainable Farming

In a groundbreaking shift towards improving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture, Vegan Village Society Uganda, with generous support from Plenty Food Netherland, has rolled out a new community water access strategy aimed at empowering women and boosting climate-resilient gardening.

Recognizing the growing need for accessible water in hilly and drought-prone areas, the organization has transitioned from installing single large-capacity water tanks to deploying multiple mid-sized tanks of 5,000 and 3,000 liters across different communities. These tanks are installed in secure and rain-harvesting-friendly locations such as homes, churches, and schools.

This decentralized approach ensures more women’s groups can benefit from the initiative. The tanks are carefully managed by the groups, who open them during dry seasons to irrigate their vegetable gardens—ensuring continued crop production, even in challenging weather conditions.

“This strategy not only increases our reach but also empowers women to become self-reliant in food production,” said Bob Rumanzi, Director of Vegan Village Society. “For us, veganism starts with the food we grow and eat. Promoting sustainable agriculture is a cornerstone of our mission, and this project is a direct reflection of that.”

The ongoing support from Plenty Food Netherland has played a pivotal role in scaling up this initiative. Their partnership continues to reinforce a shared commitment to food justice, environmental stewardship, and ethical living.

By addressing water access and promoting backyard gardening, the project is already transforming lives—enhancing nutrition, reducing the burden of food costs, and strengthening community resilience to climate shocks.

Vegan Village Society commends Plenty Food Netherland for their unwavering generosity and for standing in solidarity with grassroots efforts to build a greener, healthier, and more compassionate world.
