Vegan Village Society Calls for Urgent Action to Combat Anthrax Outbreak in Kanungu District

Urgent Appeal to Animal Welfare Partners and Animal Lovers Worldwide

Vegan Village Society urgently calls upon animal welfare organizations, development partners, and compassionate individuals to step up and help manage a dangerous anthrax outbreak in Kanungu District. This month, the Kanungu District Local Government’s Veterinary Officer confirmed the presence of anthrax, which has already claimed the lives of over 63 cows, leaving 54 others critically ill. The situation is dire, and immediate intervention is needed.

According to Bob Rumanzi, Director of Vegan Village Society Uganda, the disease is spreading rapidly, threatening the lives of animals.

While the government has restricted the movement of animals and animal products in the affected areas, no concrete steps have been taken toward treatment or vaccination. Without action, the outbreak could escalate, endangering more animals and putting human health at risk.

“We have successfully managed outbreaks in the past, such as the pig mange epidemic earlier this year. We know that with the collaboration of animal welfare organizations and the necessary resources, we can contain and prevent this anthrax outbreak. But we need your help,” said Rumanzi.

Why We Need Your Support Now

Anthrax is a deadly bacterial disease that spreads quickly through contaminated soil, affecting livestock and even posing risks to humans through direct contact with infected animals. Vaccinating the animals is crucial to halting the disease in its tracks. However, the cost of procuring vaccines and executing a comprehensive vaccination campaign is high.

With the government’s current response limited to movement restrictions, it falls upon organizations like Vegan Village Society and other animal welfare partners to act swiftly. Rumanzi added, “The cost of the vaccine and the overall vaccination process is significant, but we cannot stand by and watch as more animals die. For the health and well-being of the animals, we are committed to taking action.”

How You Can Help

We urgently call on animal welfare organizations, development partners, and individuals who care about animals to contribute toward the purchase of anthrax vaccines and the implementation of a district-wide vaccination campaign. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a direct impact on the lives of animals and the families who depend on them.

By working together, we can prevent further losses and protect the health of animals in the district. Vegan Village Society has always stood firm in promoting animal welfare, and with your support, we can make a difference yet again, just as we did with the successful management of pig mange earlier this year.
